🔢 SHV Number Calculator

Work out how many LED digit stickers you need for your paraglider, and in which size.

⚠️ Don't forget: Swiss regulations require your SHV number to be displayed on your paraglider in 40 cm height letters. Each digit is an LED-segment sticker, use this calculator to find out how many segment pieces you need to order.

Enter your SHV number

How it works

Each digit (0–9) is made up of a different number of LED segments. The table below shows the segment count for each digit:

📍 Where to Place Numbers on Your Glider

Swiss regulations require the number to be visible from below during flight (on the lower surface). Pilots may place them wherever they prefer; the two most practical spots are:

▲ leading edge Nr ▼ trailing edge

Ear / Tip Cells

On the outermost cells (Randkappe) at the wing tip, centered along the chord.

▲ leading edge Nr ▼ trailing edge

Trailing Edge, Center

At the trailing edge (on the lower surface), around the center of the span.

💡 Tip: Use a carton box when you put the stickers on the glider.

Identification Requirements for Paragliders in Switzerland

  • 🔢 Number to display: Your SHV membership number (Mitgliedsnummer), as assigned upon joining the Swiss Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association (SHV/FSVL). Typically 2–5 digits.
  • 📏 Minimum character height: 40 cm (per BAZL/SHV requirements for free-flight aircraft).
  • 🎨 Color: Must clearly contrast with the glider fabric, dark numbers on a bright glider, or bright numbers on a dark glider. Black fabric stickers on orange/yellow gliders are typical.
  • ✈️ Placement: On the bottom surface of the wing, so the number is visible from below during flight. Outer cells (ear) or trailing edge around the center are most common.
  • 🔒 Attachment: Glue material matters, normal "scotch tape" is not sufficient, the adhesive layer could damage the glider fabric or leave residue. Numbers must not come loose in flight.
  • 🛡️ Purpose: Required for SHV liability insurance coverage and for identification by air traffic control and authorities. Flying without your number is prohibited.
